After looking for, searching, and reading many arabic curriculum in
website, I would like to deliver my poin of view about the best arabic
curriculum that is suitable to conduct in learning Arabic as foreign or second
language. I found that curriculum in Department of Near eastern and Cultures
(NELC) of Indiana University Bloomington, US, namely “ARABIC LANGUAGE FOUR YEAR CURRICULUM”
is one the best arabic curriculum to be implemented for several reasonable
features.
Firstly, this arabic curriculum contains Principles that will guide
how the learning arabic will be conducted both at theoretical and practical
levels, also in this principles explained that students will learn the
classical components alongside the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), and after finishing
four years of learning MSA, the students will have attained some skills such
Use of Arabic, Explicit Knowledge of Arabic, Knowledge of cultures where arabic
is used, and Generic skills.
Secondly, for assesment, this Arabic curriculum emphasize on continuous
or formative assessment (75%) compared to summative Assessment (only 25%). It
means that the students will have appropriate mark if they join the learning
and teaching process effectively for example doing participation, quizzes, and
daily homework, alongside middle and final test.
Thirdly, in every year (year 1-4) explained about what learning
outcomes will be achived by students in detail and very specifically, so the
student can predict dan prepare
themselves before participating in learning arabic. For instance, in year 1
students will become familiar with the sounds, written form and grammar and
begin to express themselves in writing, with simple role-play and dialogues,
etc.
Fourthly, this arabic
curriculum consist of Topic Areas that will described general topis areas and
related subtopics during the fours years of Arabic instruction in clear detail
such as about People, Home Life, Life at University, Health and Fitness, Free
Time, and so on, also the specific areas are aded but there are not exhaustive
such as Journalism, Literature, Biographies of Famous People. Beside studying
such kind of topics, students are required to seek information related to the
topic in their life. So, students can observe not only about Arabic materials
but also information and knowledge. By doing those activities, students can learn by theirselves
or together with others. It can improve their skill dan basic knowledge of
Arabic.
Fifthly, for grammar Point, this Arabic Curriculum has specific
books namely “al-Kitab I+II+II” that will guide the grammar learning. In every
introduced grammar, each point is recycled and repeated in new sections so that
will master effectively and deeply.
Sixthly, in this Arabic curriculum, for students have previous
knowledge of Arabic must take a placement test given by the Departmen before
they enroll in Arabic language classes (the test will have both and oral
sections). It means that for students have basic skill of Arabic are no need to
take course that they have studied.
Seventhly, this curriculum has programme namely “ARABIC LANGUAGE AL
TRAINING” that requires the Arabic Languge Instructor to attend some trainings,
workshops, scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL), etc. By attending those
kind of activities, the instructors’ capabilities can improve and develope
efficiently. As a result of this, the arabic
learning and teaching process can run effectively and the targeted goal
will be achieved.
